Major General Benjamin Lincoln, Lincoln County's namesake, was selected by General George Washington to accept the official sword of the British surrender at Yorktown. Lincoln County was formed in 1779 and Lincolnton established as the county seat in 1785. In the years following its founding, Lincoln County enjoyed a proud history as a leader in industry, trade and culture thanks to a steady influx of pioneers to North Carolina's backcountry. By 1840 Lincoln County was one of the largest and most populous counties in North Carolina.

That same population growth continues even today. On Thursday, February 10, 2005, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office went live with Positron's suite of emergency response applications, partly in answer to that growth. "Our population has been increasing dramatically in the last five years," said Lieutenant Leroy Buff, Director of the Communications Center in the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. "We needed to add another dispatch position. We've been a Positron customer for many years and decided to upgrade the entire operation rather than adding one of the older phone sets. We upgraded to Power 911, Power MAP and Power MIS."

Among the other reasons he listed for needing an upgrade were flexibility and ease of use. He wanted to make the telecommunicators' jobs easier by speeding the process of call taking and dispatching. He also needed to be able to manage the process better himself.

When it came time to choose a vendor, Lieutenant Buff decided to rely on his 26 years of trusted experience.
