ComCARE and OnStar recognize Arapahoe County 9-1-1 operator for heroic achievement
Denver, Colorado, May 22, 2003
Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department emergency dispatcher wins the OnStar Heroes Award at the Telematics Update Awards 2003.
Sharon Dennis, an emergency dispatcher for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department, has won the OnStar Heroes Award for her role in coordinating the rescue of a Littleton, Colo., man involved in a motor vehicle crash in October. The ComCARE Alliance honored Dennis at the 2003 Telematics Update Awards held April 29 in Detroit. The award recognizes an individual who saves a life through the use of telematics technology, and ComCARE's national panel of safety experts selected the winner.
Dennis responded to an emergency call from an OnStar advisor who was contacted by a subscriber about a single vehicle crash along a rural road east of Denver. The victim was lying unconscious in the road with serious head and neck injuries. Dennis acted quickly to assess his condition and arrange for air and ground support to be dispatched to the scene. Dennis coordinated with the OnStar advisor to provide rescue crews with the latitude and longitude of the crash site and to relay instructions to witnesses at the scene. The victim survived the crash.
"Ms. Dennis' quick thinking and speedy action may have helped save this man," said Sue Hoyt, MN, RN, CEN, ComCARE Board Chair and past President of the Emergency Nurses Association. "This incident demonstrates how telematics providers and the emergency services community can work together to save lives."
Curtis Johnson, the OnStar advisor who reported the incident, also received the Telematics Hero Award for his involvement in the rescue.
"We're extremely proud that one of our own advisors was recognized along with Ms. Dennis," said OnStar President Chet A. Huber. "OnStar works with hundreds of emergency and law enforcement agencies, reporting tens-of thousands of motor vehicle emergencies each year. Close coordination with these agencies is essential for responding quickly to the needs of our subscribers."
The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office has met new technological challenges, including increasing wireless and telematics calls, through the attention to detail, hard work and dedication of their staff. Positron is proud to be the provider of the equipment that 'keeps working, and working very well'. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office selected Positron Public Safety Systems to provide Power 911 as their intelligent workstation solution in 1998, and remain very satisfied today with their choice.
