Positron gives Santa Rosa County 911,
The Power to Respond™

Santa Rosa County-911 provides emergency services to a population of 137,000. The center contains five positions of Power 911, Power CAD, Power MAP, and two positions of Power MIS. The center handles an average call volume of 175 calls per day, and performs dispatching for both Fire and EMS. Police related incidents are transferred to a Police dispatch center. Santa Rosa has been a Positron customer for over five years.

In the November 2006 time frame a sudden computer virus infected both primary and secondary 911 servers. At the time the center was making use of a Microsoft NT operating system, and the virus caused the virtual shutdown of both servers. Due to the high degree of redundancy in the Positron system not a single 911 call was lost, however it became quickly clear to Ken Bass, Sanata Rosa’s E911 Coordinator that rapid assistance would be needed. Ken made a call to Positron.

Positron responded in rapid tactical fashion. According to Ken, “The Virus was detected on a Monday afternoon; Positron began immediate remote support to contain the problem, and to keep the center operational. By Wednesday a resolution action plan had been defined, with Positron intensely working on a complete system rebuild, both with on site and remote Positron technical staff. At the peak of the resolution process Positron was involved in a nonstop full 24 hour period.”

In the December 2006 time frame Ken took key strategic operational steps to ensure such an episode does not reoccur. He had the Microsoft Windows NT operating system replaced by the more robust Windows 2000, as well he had a complete workstation upgrade take place at the center, including added virus protection. Positron was once again a close partner to ensure a smooth transition.

Since the system upgrade the center has run rock-solid, with no further virus incidents.
